National Men of Color Conference Term: Spring 2017 Description: The mission of the Men of Color National Summit at Clemson University is to close the achievement gap for African-American and Hispanic males, from cradle to career. Bringing together approximately 2,000 high school and college students, business professionals, educators, government officials and community leaders from around the country, the summit will emphasize the importance of education, best practices and choices to increase high school and college graduation rates. The national conference will lead to awareness of the changing U.S. demographics by enhancing the experience of men of color through involvement and engagement, preparing them for a global mindset. College of Education Annual Research Symposium  Term: Spring 2017 Description:  The College of Education, the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Program (Ed.D.), and the Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership (C-REAL) host an annual Research Symposium. The event features posters that identified solutions to educational problems based on applied research conducted by doctoral students from the P – 12 and Community College Leadership program specializations. The program includes a poster session by Ed.D. alumni, selected Master of Science students in the Educational Leadership Department, and other invited presenters. Presentation topics concentrate on P-12 and community college issues and implications for leadership, diversity, and access. Following the poster session, a panel discussion is held to further discuss their research and how the results of their studies can lead to different approaches to improving the research. Description: During our Instructional Leadership course via California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), we were provided with the opportunity to use our acquired knowledge and skills to develop a one-day educational fair in the city of Maywood, California. On October 15, 2016, cohort eight hosted the eighth annual Maywood Education Fair. The annual Maywood Education Fair is an initiative that started back in 2009 by a MSHE student in efforts to increase the college going culture within Maywood and the surrounding communities that are underrepresented. My partner and I specifically were task to produce workshops for the High School students and their families as they attended the fair. Term: Summer 2016 Description: The Museum of Tolerance is designed to analyze racism and prejudice in the world with a keen examination of the Jewish Holocaust. My cohort and I visited the museum in June to further our awareness of oppression and the importance of change. Term: Spring 2016 Description: The purpose of this assignment is for students to gain experience in conducting a qualitative research project and also to gain understanding of the experience of a specific demographic population of college students This research project focused on how participants’ curricular and co-curricular experiences affected the persistence of students of color in STEM majors in their third, fourth, or fifth year of their undergraduate careers. The focus was on the student experience or programs implemented to assist in student graduation. This study attempts to uncover commonalities among third and fourth year students of color that ultimately drive them towards graduation in order to assist faculty members and student affairs professionals to best support future students to persist within these majors through intentional strategies.
