Description:
During our Instructional Leadership course via California State University,
Fullerton (CSUF), we were provided with the opportunity to use our acquired
knowledge and skills to develop a one-day educational fair in the city of
Maywood, California. On October 15, 2016, cohort eight hosted the eighth annual
Maywood Education Fair. The annual Maywood Education Fair is an initiative that
started back in 2009 by a MSHE student in efforts to increase the college going
culture within Maywood and the surrounding communities that are
underrepresented. My partner and I specifically were task to produce workshops
for the High School students and their families as they attended the fair.

Reflections:
Ultimately,
our high school program was a fruitful and indelible experience. We were able
to provide a variety of imperative recommendations that can further aid future
program developmental structures to expand the positive impact on our high
school students of Maywood and the surrounding community. In result, our
attendees included students and family members, who provided positive energy
and were profoundly engaged in discussion and receptive to the information we
dispersed.
As expressed, we built upon the framework of
Yosso’s (2006) concept of the holistic asset based Community Cultural Wealth
approach. In addition, we developed detailed learning outcomes to apply the
needed direction of our programs to essentially attain our learning goals for
the students. Through our formal and informal assessment, we were able to
identify that our high school students of Maywood had an acquired awareness of
college but also need further support along the way expand their experience of
validation. Consequently, we firmly believe that our programs were successful
and we hope that our program direction, assessment findings, and finalized
suggestions can be useful for future workshop implementations.
