Reflection:
The Male
Success Alliance showcased their 7th Annual Male Success Alliance Spring
Summit. This is such an extremely important event that students from all over
Los Angeles participate in. As a product of Compton, I am well aware of some of
the issues that transpire within the community and what Men of color face. My
road to college was not an easy one, it definitely was a tough road. I didn't
know the process to get to college and no one was able to strategically help me
plan out the necessary steps to get to college. College was scary for me, so it
didn't surprise me to witness some of the expressions of fear on the students
faces they entered the event. I immediately began speaking with some of the
students. I felt that it was necessary for me to engage with these students so
they would feel welcomed and they could immediately see someone like them that
they could relate to. Students were able to hear various testimonies from
college students who identified as first generation, minority male, Dr. Andrade
spoke about the rose that grew from the concrete (Tupac's) poem. He applied
that concept to the lived experiences of the students around the room. He
provided the notion of be Educated vs being Schooled, He highlighted the importance
to do research and for students to read more to understand and become aware of
their cultural history and identity. Student were also able to particpate in e college and resource fair that included internal and external resources which included local universities, community collegtes, intership opportunities, and volunteering opportunities for students to have access to. Once departing, students facial
expressions were definitely different from when they arrived.
